There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about a European Christmas market. As the days get shorter and temperatures drop, town squares and historic streets are transformed with wooden stalls, twinkling lights, festive decorations and the smell of something delicious cooking nearby.

Christmas markets are popular for good reason. They’re a chance to experience a city at a completely different time of year, often with a much more festive atmosphere than you’ll find during the summer. Historic buildings and cobbled streets take on a different character when they’re lit up for Christmas, and even a familiar city can feel completely new.

Exploring Strasbourg’s Christmas Markets

Explore Strasbourg’s magical Christmas markets, from the historic stalls around the cathedral to the festive streets of Petite France. Here’s what to expect, what to see, and my tips for making the most of a visit.

How Long Do You Need to Visit a Christmas Market?

A Christmas market can make a brilliant weekend break, especially when the destination is easy to reach. You can spend a couple of days wandering between markets, stopping for coffee and festive food, and enjoying the city without needing a packed sightseeing itinerary.

Of course, not all Christmas markets are alike. Some are enormous and attract huge crowds, while others are smaller and more local. Some are all about spectacular settings and traditions; others are better for food, shopping or simply soaking up the atmosphere.

I’ve always loved the particular magic of visiting European cities at Christmas. From wandering through the wooden stalls of Strasbourg to drinking something warm beneath the mountains in Bolzano, Christmas markets are one of my favourite ways to experience a city in winter.

I’ve visited Christmas markets across Europe and I’m gradually building this collection of guides based on my own trips.
